Best Stadiums In Sri Lanka For Olympics

September 1, 2014 By James Martin Leave a Comment

Are you someone who is a sports fan and who also loves to travel? If the answer is yes then you must get visas of Sri Lanka for your entire family and travel to this beautiful tropical country. Getting tourist visas for yourself and your family is not that tough. Earlier it was a bit difficult but since the change of the regime, the rules have been relaxed. Sri Lanka is a beautiful island country in the Indian Ocean with a tropical climate. But in this article we will not discuss its majestic and breath-taking beauty. Here we will discuss why this country appeals to the sports enthusiasts.

As a sports enthusiast or an athlete, the first thing that you will look for is sports facilities and stadiums. It won’t be wrong to say that Stadiums reflect the overall sporting environment of a country. Sri Lanka has plenty of stadiums and most of them have been built or renovated to make them suitable for Olympic Games. Even though Sri Lanka has never hosted Olympic Games in the past, but this island nation is gearing up fast to come up to the standards that the Olympic Committee demands before granting the host status to any country.

Let’s read about some of the best Olympic stadiums in Sri Lanka.

· Galle International Stadium:

This stadium has a bit of history associated with it. It was completely destroyed in the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. But the Sri Lankan government rebuilt the stadium and since then it has been one of the major sporting attractions of the country. It has facilities for all of the games included in the Olympics.

· RangiriDambulla International Stadium:

This stadium is named after the Dambulla temple. The Sri Lankan government leased 60 acres of land from the temple authorities to build the stadium and decided to name it after the temple. While visiting this stadium, you get a taste of both sports and Sri Lankan religious practices!! The stadium has a seating capacity of 30,000 people. It is large enough to host most of the Olympic events. During the early hours of the morning, you would be able to see young athletes practicing in the stadium. The stadium is open to the general public and acts as the main sporting attraction in the central Sri Lankan province. Even though all of the facilities of the stadium have been highly praised by the spectators and the athletes alike, some have criticized its flood light arrangement.

· R. Premadasa Stadium:

This is the largest stadium in Sri Lanka and is considered amongst the best stadiums in the entire Indian Sub-continent. It was primarily built for the Sri Lankan Cricket Team but later in 1994 it was modified to host various other games. It has a seating capacity of 35,000 people. Such a large seating capacity makes it an idle stadium to host the opening and ending Olympic ceremonies. The stadium also has a media box that can accommodate more than 200 journalists and reporters. Recently the stadium was renovated to include more facilities for the viewers and athletes at a cost of 8 million U.S. Dollars.
